Current Affairs:- June 01 – June 10, 2019

  • The newly-sworn in NDA government has approved the extension of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) to all the farmers in the country. Centre also approved the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Pension Yojana under which small and marginal farmers will get a minimum fixed pension of 3,000 rupees per month on attaining the age of 60 years.
  • Former ISRO chief Dr. Kasturirangan led Committee submitted the draft National Educational Policy (NEP) to HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank in New Delhi. The policy draft recommends incorporation of Indian knowledge systems in the curriculum, constituting a National Education Commission and curbing arbitrary fees hikes by private schools.
  • Assam government has waived admission fees for students taking admission up to Post Graduate level whose parental income is less than 2 lakh rupees per year.
  • Financial Literacy Week 2019 was observed from June 3-7 on the theme of “Farmers” and how they benefit by being a part of the formal banking system. Financial Literacy Week is an initiative of RBI to promote awareness of key topics every year through a focused campaign.
  • ONGC, India’s top oil and gas producer, has toppled Indian Oil Corp (IOC) to regain the crown of being the country’s most profitable public sector company.
  • Telangana Formation Day is celebrated on the formation of Telangana State on 2nd June every year since 2014. Note: K Chandrashekhar Rao is the first and present CM of Telangana. Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana. The current governor of Telangana is ESL Narasimhan.
  • The Telangana Government has extended the Rythu Bandhu scheme for 2019-20. The scheme, which provides Initial Investment support to agriculture and horticulture crops through a grant of Rs.4000 per acre per farmer each season towards the purchase of inputs like seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, labour, and other field operations, has now been enhanced from Rs 4000 to Rs.5000 per acre per farmer per season.
  • Rajasthan government has increased the financial assistance given to school girls under the ‘Aapki Beti’. Under the Aapki Beti scheme, girls living under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) and whose mother or father or both have died to get annual financial assistance in the state.
  • World Milk Day was observed on 1st The theme for World Milk Day 2019 is “Drink Milk: Today & Everyday.”
  • In a first, a 25-year-old engineering graduate from Odisha has become the youngest Member of Parliament to the 17th Lok Sabha. Chandrani Murmu was elected as Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate from the Keonjhar seat.
  • To encourage digital payments, the Nandan Nilekani committee has suggested a host of measures, including elimination of charges, round-the-clock RTGS and NEFT facility, and duty-free import of point-of-sales machines. The committee, which was appointed by the RBI had submitted its suggestions on promoting digital payments to Governor Shaktikanta Das.
  • Madhya Pradesh Cabinet has passed a resolution to increase reservation quota for Other Backward Classes (OBC) from existing 14% to 27%.
  • IndianOil, Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL)and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL)had signed a joint venture in New Delhi for Kandla-Gorakhpur LPG Pipeline Project. They will be laying the world’s longest LPG pipeline from Kandla (Gujarat) to Gorakhpur (UP).
  • CAG Rajiv Mehrishi has been chosen external auditor for WHO. Note: Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is Director-General of the WHO.
  • World Bicycle Day was observed on 3rd June.
  • The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression was observed on 4th  June.  
  • The Centre,the Tamil Nadu Government and the World Bank have signed a $287-million loan agreement for the Tamil Nadu Health System Reform Programme (TNHSRP).
  • The World Bank retained its forecast of India’s growth rate at 7.5% for the current financial Year 2019-20.  Note: World Bank Headquarters in: Washington DC, USA, Established in: 1944, President:David Malpass.
  • India ranked 95th out of 129 countries in Global Gender Equality Index. The list was topped by Denmark. Chad was placed at bottom most position (129th).
  • World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5th. The theme for World Environment Day 2019 is ‘Beat Air Pollution’.
  • International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing was observed on 5th June.
  • The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC)at its meeting decided to reduce the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 25 basis points to 5.75% from 6.00%. Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF stands adjusted to 5.50%, and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate to 6.0%.
  • Sunil Chhetri became the most capped India player by surpassing Bhaichung Bhutia’s 107 international matches.
  • The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)has become the first ever project in the country to receive power generated from a waste-to-energy plant.
  • Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)has launched a Fiscal Performance Index (FPI) to assess state and central budgets.
  • World Food Safety Day is observed every year on7th The theme for World Food Safety Day 2019 is ‘Food Safety, Everyone’s Business’.
  • Maldives will confer ‘Nishan Izzuddin’ award on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is the highest award to honour foreign nationals.
  • The RBI has slapped a penalty of Rs. 2 crores on Kotak Mahindra Bank for the non-state lender’s failure to adhere to the regulator’s diktat on promoter shareholding. The central bank has been engaged in a dispute with Kotak Mahindra since 2014 over its failure to meet the milestone for stake reduction by Uday Kotak, the billionaire promoter of the bank.
  • The Jammu and Kashmir government has removed J&K Bank Chairman Parvez Ahmad and appointed RK Chibber as interim chairman of the lender.
  • World Oceans Day was observed on 8th The theme of World Oceans Day 2019 is ‘Gender and the Ocean’.
  • In French Open Tennis, Australian Ashleigh Barty won her first Grand Slam singles title after defeating Czech teenager Marketa Vondrousova. Rafael Nadal was the defending champion in the Men’s Singles and won his 12th French Open title.
  • The Ministry Of Home Affairs (MHA)has amended the Foreigners (Tribunals) Order, 1964, and has empowered district magistrates in all States and Union Territories to set up tribunals to decide whether a person staying illegally in India is a foreigner or not.
  • The National Center for Good Governance (NCGG), India’s leading civil services training institution, has entered into an MOU with the Maldives Civil Services Commission for capacity building of 1000 Maldives civil servants over the next 5 years. 
  • Thailand’s new parliament has elected military government chief Prayuth Chan-ocha as the country’s prime minister.
